Jyotirao Phule: The Man Who Wanted Every Child to Learn

Jyotirao Phule (11 April 1827 – 28 November 1890)

Imagine a time when girls weren’t allowed to go to school. People were treated unfairly just because they were born into certain families. That was the world Jyotirao Phule was born into — and he wasn’t okay with it.

👦 Who Was Jyotirao Phule?

Jyotirao Phule was a kind, brave man from Maharashtra who lived more than 190 years ago. He believed every child — girl or boy, rich or poor — should get the chance to go to school.

At a time when many people didn’t want girls to learn, he and his wife Savitribai Phule opened India’s first school for girls in 1848. It was a big, bold step that changed history.
